I need to do a Memorial Day Weekend Post. I'm always a few days behind, but for today, I decided to do a little random catching up.
I finally found a homemade bread recipe I really like. You can see it here. I've always been a good cook. It's because I come from a long line of fabulous cooks. Both the men and the women in my family are good cooks. I come from a really traditional family, but it never occurred to me that cooking is traditionally something women do. My grandfather, my dad, and my uncle are three of the best cooks I know. To me cooking is easy because when you cook the recipe is more of a suggestion than a list of hard fast rules, and I usually just make it up as I go along. But baking is a different story. I mean I know you can play with your baking recipes, but it's also really easy to mess things up. This bread was pretty much good as is. It has no sugar (only honey and molasses), and it's 100% whole wheat. I did add just a tad more yeast than it called for. Anyway, it's not too crumbly, and it's good for pretty much whatever you want . . . sandwiches, toast, plain with butter . . .
Later on today, I'm going to make shrimp and chicken gumbo. I have no recipe for this so it'll just be whatever I feel like throwing in. My mom gave me a bunch of fresh okra from her garden, and I have fresh tomatoes to add. There's nothing like fresh vegetables that haven't been on a truck for three weeks and then allowed to sit in the back of a store for another week or two.
After I ran yesterday, my ankles were kind of sore. Nothing too bad, and certainly not what it was before. Still, I've learned my lesson (I think). I've been working out pretty hard lately, and I usually put in some time on the elliptical after I run. Add to that 15-20 minutes of strength and toning, and I think my muscles need a break. So I'm taking today off completely.
I'm not good at relaxing. I don't sit still well. My sister always teases me that I'm always on Twitter/Facebook, but that's only because I have my phone in my hand 99% of the time. I always have a list of things a mile long I want done, and during the summer I can get especially OCD about everything being cleaned, washed, and put away. One of my summer resolutions is to take some time to relax and enjoy myself. Everything does not have to be done right this minute. No one will die.
My dogs had a few fleas. Freak out. I've never treated my dogs for fleas because I've never had to. They're mostly inside dogs, and I have never seen a flea on them. But I saw a couple the other day so I broke down and bought the flea pills. I don't like the idea of putting chemicals on their skin that they can spread around my house. Anyway, they also got a bath (I bathe them regularly) and a good soaking in apple cider vinegar. I also tried to bathe my cat. I wasn't successful. I did however manage to douse him in apple cider vinegar too. In case you're wondering fleas and a lot of other bugs, parasites, and bacteria hate apple cider vinegar. When I first found my cat (8 years ago) he was covered in fleas, but only weighed about a pound. So I bathed him in apple cider vinegar regularly, and the fleas disappeared. I had kind of forgotten how good it is, but I got some yesterday. I also put a little in the dog's water. They never noticed and it's good for them.
Final random thought. I promise. I got violet and red streaks put in my hair. Not like bright and glowing. They're noticeable, but they blend well. Years ago, I used to put blond in my almost black hair, but I'm really over that look. I wasn't meant to be a blond. They're pretty subtle, but I like them.

And in the words of Porky Pig . . .
